We love small gardens or farms. Considering the size, it forces us to be more creative so as to maximise the output. Some options include making use of vertical spaces, packing more plants in an area, etc. What we also love and recommend is maximising the margins.
The intersection of two spaces are often ignored, and yet can be extremely productive. The side of the road or walking path, the space next to a farm house or chicken coop, or the area along the boundary wall. On a small farm, such spaces should be utilised and the results can surprise you.
At our Fikirini farm, we are packing such spaces with herbs, fodder crops, sacrificial plants, flowers, nitrogen fixers, and other useful plants. The results are amazing.
So here is a challenge: walk around your garden or farm and observe. Where are the margins? Are you utilising them? If not, consider maximising their use and see how productive they can become.
